Before the internet was available pretty much everywhere, people would find out the daily happenings by sitting down with the newspaper. While times have changed, it’s not all that different. Instead of opening up the paper they open up their email, or social media. The question is – are you what they see?
Every business wants to have a great email database. You want people to join, but there has to be a reason for them to A) join, and B) stay interested in what you’re sending their way. There are a few ways that you can get them to sign up, and keep them coming back for more.
Content, content, content!
Obviously if they’re signing up for your email database they’re interested in your product. So now you’ve got to send them what they want and keep them buying what you’re selling. One way to do that is to make sure you’re sharing good content with them. That could include blog content. If it’s really good, not only will they open it but maybe they’ll forward the email too. Other content ideas would be contests, offers, or creating a useful online tool or resources.
Put yourself out there
Maybe they aren’t aware that you even have an email newsletter. You don’t want to hide it on your website. Put it front and center so that they know you provide it, and that you want them to sign up. Make sure it’s placed prominently on your website. You could do this a couple of different ways:
- A popup that opens upon entering the site – but don’t make it too annoying. They’re not going to want to see that popup every time they login to your website.
- Give it good placement on your homepage. Put it at the top of your header, in you header, or in the left or right column so that they’re not hunting to find it.
- Use social media. You could create a custom tab for your page or use the new call-to-action feature for Facebook business pages. Share an email with your twitter followers that will encourage them to sign up. Also, you can use YouTube popups during videos as a creative way to get people to sign up.
The old fashioned way
There’s no harm in using a live event to get people to sign up right then and there. Tradeshows and events are perfect to engage people on the spot and encourage them to join your database to stay up to date with what you have to offer. You can also use traditional marketing to promote your email as well.
