Reach New Audiences

//

There are a ton of talented people out there. Over the years I’ve experienced some truly incredible shows, films, and music created by people who have a passion for their hobby. I’ve thought that more than a few of them could turn what they do into a career if they knew how to navigate the digital waters better, and in turn get the word-of-mouth they would need to reach new audiences. This four part guide is dedicated to giving entertainers the tools they need to succeed.

1.) Make Sure You Are Accessible

The first thing that you need to do is have all of your online assets in order. I would recommend at the very least creating a website, Facebook page, and twitter account. If you’re going to promote your material you need to have a place to promote it (the website), and the ability to keep in touch with your fans (social media).

2.) Utilize Streaming Services

It’s not your grandfather’s media market anymore. Sure, you can still submit your movie to festivals, get your film shown at an independent theater, or have your band play songs at the local bar, but it’s advantageous to start thinking about digital as a replacement or as part of an entire strategy.

Would you rather wait a few days to get a movie in the mail, or stream it right away? The simple truth is that if you can reach people easily, they’ll be more likely to watch, listen to, or purchase your work.

3.) Advertise Aggressively

Creating amazing content isn’t enough on its own. You need to tell people that it exists, and entice them to take a look at it.

Ideas for Promoting Your Work:

  • Promote it on your personal social media profiles. Let people know that you have a movie/film/podcast/etc. that is coming out, and be enticing with the language that you use. I’d include clips of highlights if possible, to entice everyone.

  • Do SEO On YouTube – Doing basic SEO can go a long way. Just making a title for a video such as “Writing’s On The Wall Cover” or “Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer Review” can increase your chances of getting noticed, and building your audience.

  • Reach Out To Discussion Groups – This one could be a very powerful tool for movie makers. For example, imagine if you created a horror movie, you could go to a variety of forums dedicated to the genre, tell people about your movie, and give them teaser video clips.

4.) See What People Have To Say About Your Work

The only way you get better at things in life is by accepting constructive criticism. Maybe you’ve done everything possible to promote your particular brand of entertainment, but it isn’t catching on. I would see what people are saying, and see how you can make adjustments to create a better product.
